Slow Cooker Tips

If you don’t have a slow cooker, you are missing out on a lot of great meals that can be made with very little effort. Set it up before you go to work or out for a day of fun, and your dinner is ready for you when you get home. But slow cookers aren’t just for dinners. You can get breakfast ready beforehand, put it in the slow cooker, and go enjoy Christmas morning with your family instead of spending all morning in the kitchen making a special breakfast. You can even bake cakes in slow cookers!

As long as you follow a few simple tips, it’s kind of hard to mess up anything made in a slow cooker. Beyond the tips that you should follow in the instruction manual, here are a few more things to keep in mind:

  • For best results, your slow cooker should be between halfway and three-quarters full. If there is liquid in your recipe, there only has to be enough to come up halfway your ingredients.
  • Make sure your lid fits snugly! The slow cooker won’t work correctly if heat can escape.
  • Slow cookers are made to be turned on and left unattended, but cookers do let off some heat. Make sure your cooker isn’t too close to walls or other appliances – leave about six inches around the cooker.
  • The appeal of the slow cooker is that you can just put your food in and go. However, for extra flavor, take a few minutes to brown your meat and sauté your vegetables.
